Maintaining a regular physical fitness routine can help prevent these issues. For sprains— specifically, ankle sprains—wearing the proper footwear for the job and ensuring pathways are clear of water, ice and debris is also important. #2 / BACK INJURIES These are often due to repetitive strain. Using dollies and utility carts where possible, ensuring ergonomic seating and driving conditions and staying physically active through stretching and exercising can help prevent these injuries. #4 / OPEN WOUNDS Unsafe equipment setup and moving too quickly around sharp portions of farm implements can be a factor in these injuries. Having a workplace safety assessment can assist in the creation of practices and procedures to minimize the risk of such injuries. #1 / FRACTURES These can be due to slips and falls on unmaintained icy or wet patches or by falls from equipment. Take stock of locations that may be prone to ice buildup and sprinkle salt or gravel. Safe use of equipment is key to preventing fractures due to falls. This includes spatial awareness when climbing on or off seeders, sprayers, grain bins and so on. In addition, proper non-slip footwear will help farmers avoid slips from tractor steps.
