Cleanfarms Canada is a non-profit organization that assists farm communities in recycling and disposing of non-organic farm waste. This includes collecting old and unwanted pesticide and animal medications. Operating in various regions across Canada, Cleanfarms corralled close to 280,000 kilograms of unwanted pesticides in 2016 alone.

“Collecting unwanted and obsolete pesticides and animal health products for safe and secure disposal is one of Cleanfarms’ most important stewardship programs,” said general manager Barry Friesen. He emphasized there is no cost to farmers to participate in the disposal program. “We collect these materials under full extended producer responsibility, meaning the pesticides and animal health industries pay collection and disposal costs.

“This farmer-industry partnership ensures these materials are managed properly when they are no longer wanted, which contributes to a cleaner environment and enhances farmers’ stewardship of their land,” he said.

Cleanfarm’s next Alberta roundup will take place at 20 north and central locations from Oct. 7-11, 2019. Its Peace Region roundup will operate at six sites from Oct 16-18.
